HARPER: “CAN WE AFFORD ANOTHER 100 DAYS?”

WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Representative Gregg Harper (R–Miss.) commented today on the President’s budget, on which House and Senate Democrats rushed to complete action by the 100th day of the Obama presidency.

“The adoption of the President’s $3.7 trillion budget continues with the trend of explosive spending, taxing and borrowing led by Democrats in Washington. Families throughout Mississippi are tightening their belts and small businesses are cutting expenses while the Democratic leadership has borrowed more taxpayer dollars in the first 100 days than all previous presidents have combined, and have raised taxes on middle-class families in the midst of an economic downturn. Arriving at Debt Day this past Sunday – earlier than any previous year in history – brings me to question: Can we afford another 100 days?

“Despite claims of ‘fiscal responsibility,’ the Obama administration’s budget tremendously increases the size of government in addition to creating 33 new federal programs over the past four months through spending in the so-called stimulus. The common sense answer is to freeze non-defense and non-veterans spending, suspend the capital gains tax through 2010 instead of increasing taxes on investment as proposed by the President, and help create and protect jobs by allowing families and small businesses to keep more of what they earn.”

A conservative man of faith and integrity, Gregg was elected in November, 2008 to serve the citizens of Mississippi’s Third Congressional District. Soon after the election, his peers elected him as the only freshman of the Republican Steering Committee in the House of Representatives. Gregg is the only Republican freshman appointed by Republican Minority Leader John Boehner to the Committee on House Administration and also sits on the Committee on the Judiciary and the Committee on the Budget. Gregg currently resides in Pearl with his wife of 29 years, Sidney, and their two children, Livingston and Maggie, where the Harpers are active members of Crossgates Baptist church.
