HARPER COMMENTS ON OBAMA ADMINISTRATION DEFENSE CUTS AFTER MERIDIAN LOCKHEED MARTIN TOUR
MERIDIAN, MS – U.S. Representative Gregg Harper (R–Miss.) toured the Lockheed Martin Subassembly Plant in Meridian today which produces portions of the F-22 and the C-130J.
Discussions to continue production on the F-22 topped the priority list after yesterday’s announcement by Defense Secretary Robert Gates to cap production at 187 fighters.
“At a time when we should be focusing resources and research into defense funding, it would be poor judgment by the Obama Administration to make a decision which would defer attention from the first rate equipment our service men and women deserve,” said Congressman Gregg Harper. “Additionally, this choice runs the risk of impacting important manufacturing jobs in East Central Mississippi.
“I hope that the President will reconsider his decision to scratch the F-22 Raptor program. It is a horrible idea to cut missile defense by $1.4 billion, particularly with the recent news of North Korea’s recent launch and the danger that Iran posts.”

A conservative man of faith and integrity, Gregg was elected in November, 2008 to serve the citizens of Mississippi’s Third Congressional District. Soon after the election, his peers elected him as the only freshman of the Republican Steering Committee in the House of Representatives. Gregg is the only Republican freshman appointed by Republican Minority Leader John Boehner to the Committee on House Administration and also sits on the Committee on the Judiciary and the Committee on the Budget. Gregg currently resides in Pearl with his wife of 29 years, Sidney, and their two children, Livingston and Maggie, where the Harpers are active members of Crossgates Baptist church.
