FISCAL YEAR 2009 SPENDING PRODUCES MORE GOVERNMENT

WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Representative Gregg Harper (R–Miss.) issued the following statement today as Fiscal Year 2009 ends on September 30, 2009 with federal government spending, deficits and debt at record highs.

“Seven brief months after President Obama signed his $787 billion so-called ‘stimulus’ into law, the economy continues to rapidly lose jobs as the national unemployment rate approaches 10 percent. The only sign of growth can be found in the federal government’s workforce, which has gained over 25,000 new employees across 14 major agencies – including hires just to oversee ‘stimulus’ spending.

“As we end this fiscal year of record deficits, the President’s misguided budget calls for more spending and is expected to run up nearly $9 trillion in deficits over the next 10 years. Taxpayers continue to express their disapproval with wasteful federal government spending. I stand with the taxpayers in saying we should begin fixing our economy by making tough decisions today instead of burying our kids and grandkids with future government debt.”
