Dear Friend,

This morning a gunman opened fire on a group of Republican legislators as they were practicing for the charity Congressional Baseball Game set to take place tomorrow evening.

As Chairman of the Committee on House Administration, I was briefed immediately following this terrible event and the committee and I have continued to monitor the situation throughout the day.  I want to express my utmost confidence in the investigation that is being conducted by the United States Capitol Police and the FBI, who are continuing to work with local law enforcement.

We are deeply saddened and troubled in the House today over this horrific attack on our friends and our colleagues.  Although we are surrounded by challenges, I am reminded of God’s faithfulness, and I fall to my knees in awe of our great Lord and Savior to ask his blessings on those who were impacted.

I am thankful for the heroism and bravery of those who came to the aid of the injured. Our great U.S. Capitol Police officers risk their lives each and every day to protect our Capitol complex and all those who visit our nation’s capital. They did nothing less today. It is clear to me that these heroes, Special Agent Griner and Special Agent Bailey, saved many lives in their line of duty this morning.

Today is a day that many members will not forget, but in the midst of confusion and fury, the U.S. House of Representatives showed great strength and unity. We came together as one, and that is a powerful response to violence and fear.

Please join me in praying for my friend and colleague, Representative Steve Scalise, who was badly injured in this morning’s attack. Our thoughts and prayers are with him, his wife and his loved ones during this very difficult time. I also ask for prayers for the U.S. Capitol Police officers and the staffers who were injured in this morning’s attack.

“So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” Isiah 41:10

Thank you for allowing me to serve you, and may God bless Mississippi and our great nation.
